['pɔrtu a'lɛgri; portugiesisch »fröhlicher Hafen«], Hauptstadt und Hafen des Bundesstaates Rio Grande do Sul, Brasilien, am Rio Guaíba, der hier in den Nordwestzipfel der Lagoa dos Patos mündet, 1,29 Mio. Einwohner, als Agglomeration 3,247 Mio. Einwohner Pôrto Alegre ist Kulturzentrum (Sitz der Universität von Rio Grande do Sul, einer katholischen Universität und zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Einrichtungen, Museen); katholischer Erzbischofssitz; Wirtschaftszentrum des Staates und Südbrasiliens; die Industrie verarbeitet Erzeugnisse des stark von deutsch-stämmigen Siedlern geprägten landwirtschaftlichen Umlands (im Bergland nördlich von Pôrto Alegre konzentrieren sich in zehn Dörfern 90 % des brasilianischen Weinbaus) sowie Holz; ferner Textil-, Metall- und chemische Industrie, Erdölraffinerie, Schiffbau. Die städtische Agglomeration umfasst fünf weitere Großstädte (Canoas, Gravataí, Novo Hamburgo, São Leopoldo, Viamão), die durch U-Bahn-Linien (zum Teil im Bau) mit Pôrto Alegre verbunden sind.
 
 
Pôrto Alegre wurde 1742 durch Einwanderer von den Azoren gegründet.
